WHAT IS PASSIVE VOICE ? Passive voice is a sentence or clause in which the subject receives the action of the verb.
Functions of passive voice • To emphasize the object or receiving the action – Rebekah was selected for a free gift. • To emphasize the action instead of the actor – Our car was repaired by our neighbor. • When the agent is unknown – Her house was broken last night. • When the agent is unimportant – I was born in July. – I was born by my mother in july.
Form of passive voice Be + past participle (verb 3 ) There are two main rules to all Passive Voice forms 1. Add the verb “Be” in the same tense as the sentence in its active voice form 2. Use the Past Participle form of the main verb
Examples of passive voice Active voice Passive voice Simple present Suci helps Nisa is helped by Suci. Present continuos Suci is helping Nisa is being helped by Suci. Present perfect Suci has helped Nisa has been helped by Suci. Simple past Suci helped Nisa was helped by Suci. Past continuos Suci was helping Nisa was being helped by Suci. Past perfect Suci had helped Nisa had bee helped by Suci. Simple future Suci will help Nisa will be helped by Suci Be going to Suci is going to help Nisa is going to be helped by Suci. Must Suci must helped Nisa must be helped by Suci.
Note : Only transitive verbs (verb that are followed by an object) are used in the passive. It is not possible to use verbs such as happen, sleep, come, and seem (intransitive verb) in the passive. The progressive (continuous) forms of the present perfect, past perfect, future, and future perfect are very seldom used in the passive voice.
