Write down the 8 parts of speech: Noun, Pronoun, Verb, Adjective, Adverb, Preposition, Conjunction, Interjection A NOUN is a person, place, thing, or idea. A PRONOUN is a word that takes the place of a noun. Nouns and Pronouns will be either in the NOMINATIVE case or the ACCUSATIVE case (they cannot be in both cases at the same time). If a noun/pronoun is acting as the subject of a sentence or clause, it is in the NOMINATIVE case. (Hint: ask yourself if the noun is doing an action or is “attached” to the verb. ) Of the underlined words, circle those that are in the nominative case. 1. I caught a wild monkey yesterday. 2. I think he came from Madagascar. 3. He bit my hand when I tried to feed him. 4. Then I tried to feed him some bananas. 5. It turns out that he is allergic to fruit.

If a noun/pronoun is acting as an object (direct object, indirect object, or object of a preposition), it is in the ACCUSATIVE case. Example of Direct Object: I threw the ball. Mom called me yesterday. My dog chewed up my new shoe. Example of Indirect Object: I threw Timmy the ball. We showed her the movie. My teacher gave Mary a detention. Example of Object of a Preposition: I threw the ball over the fence. The pattern of that shirt is awful! Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. 1. What do all of these objects have in common? (Look at where they are placed in the sentence. ) Write S above the underlined word if it is acting as a subject (nominative case) or an O if it is acting as an object (accusative case). 2. The judge gave her the prize. 3. I often wonder what my dog is thinking. 4. The tree fell on my car. 5. He and I are going to a play on Saturday. 6. This computer is as old as a dinosaur.

I cautiously looked around for the owner of the other car, but I could not find him or her. I frantically scribbled an apology on my notepad to leave on the car. Many people were walking by on the bustling sidewalks. Most of them ignored me as they saw me composing a note to the absent owner of the damaged vehicle.
