NOUNS • Definition: a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea. Person: sister, president, child, mother Place: park, zoo, school, city Things: book, banana, car, notebook Ideas: honesty, truth, love, progress

NOUNS… CONTINUED • Common Noun names any person, place, thing or idea. movie • Proper Noun names a specific person, place, thing or idea. President Obama • Concrete Noun names things you can see or touch • Abstract Noun names ideas, qualities, and feelings that can’t be seen or touched.

PRONOUNS • Pronoun- a word that takes the place of one or more nouns. • Personal Pronoun- pronouns that refer to people or things: I, we, she, it, they, you, us, me • Possessive Pronoun- pronouns that show who or what has something: my, your, her, his, its, our, their, mine • ANTECEDENT- the word a pronoun refers to in a sentence. The word antecedent means “going before. ”

PRONOUNS…CONTINUED • Indefinite Pronouns- does not refer to a particular person, place, or thing: another, anybody, anything, each, no one, everything, one, much, nobody, nothing, somebody, someone, something • Interrogative Pronouns- pronouns used to introduce an interrogative sentence: who, whom, which, what, whose • Demonstrative Pronouns- pronoun that points out something: this, these, that, those

VERBS • Action verbs- expresses an action and can be made up of more than one word. shout, have memorized • Physical action verbs examples: arrive, run, dance, sing • Mental action verbs examples: forget, think, appreciate, remember • Helping verbs: be, is, am, are, was, were, have, has, had, do • Linking verbs: be (am, is, are, was, were), become, seem, appear, look, taste, feel, smell, sound, grow, remain, stay

ADJECTIVES • Adjectives- describes people, places, things and ideas. • Describes or modifies a noun or a pronoun only • Proper Adjective: adjective formed from proper nouns: Florida oranges, American history • Articles: a special group of adjectives : a, an, the

ADVERBS • Adverbs- modifies a verb, adjective or another adverb and most are formed by adding –ly to an adjective. • Adverbs may tell how or in what manner an action is done. • May tell where and in what direction an action is done. • Adverbs modify verbs: How- easily, sadly, completely When- soon, now, never Where- here, there, everywhere, above • Adverbs modify adjective: How- extremely, very, quickly To what extent-unusually, quite

PREPOSITIONS • Preposition- a word that relates a noun or a pronoun to another word in the sentence • Prepositional phrase- a group of words that begins with a [preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun (the object of the preposition)] • Example: • Hang the painting [outside the new auditorium]. • [Between the chair and the table] was a window. • David joined the group [inside the new sports center].

INTERJECTIONS • Interjection- a word or group of words that express emotion. It has no grammatical connection to other words in the sentence. • Common Interjections: aha ha oops alas hey ouch gee good grief hooray no well wow great oh yes
