Parts of Speech- Definition • A category to which a word is assigned in accordance with its syntactic functions • Every word we use has a specific function, whether it be to describe someone or something, show an action or represent a place, person or thing

Parts of Speech- A Technique to Remember the Acronym: Anne always carries ice near people playing volleyball

Adjective • Describing words • Primarily used to describe nouns and or pronouns.

Adjective- Examples q q The car is big. My food was delicious. Italy is an interesting country. Mandy’s hair is beautiful.

Adverb • • • Used to describe an action Usually end in ly Words used to modify adjectives or verbs

Adverb- Examples q q My mother placed the food carefully on the table. The deer slowly approached the river bank. Mr. Smith abruptly stopped the English lesson. The country has been financially stable for years.

Conjunction • Words that are used to connect two events/things • ‘Joining’ words • Some words include: if, and, but, or

Conjunction -Examples q My father gets angry if you play with his tool box. q My sister is naughty and cute. q It is warm today but it may get chilly in the afternoon. q You can either have the chocolate cake or the vanilla cake.

Interjection • Show emotions and feelings • Many times you do not need a sentence to understand the emotion these words are trying to portray • They are sentences on their own

Interjection- Examples q q Stop! Phew! Eww! Boo!

Noun • Words referring to a place, person, idea or thing • Collective nouns refer to things/people as a unit • 2 main types of nouns- common nouns and proper nouns such as

Noun- Examples q q He plays the guitar. She lives in Turkey. The chickens woke me up this morning. I sat on a crowded bus.

Pronoun • A word that replaces a noun or noun phrase (I, me, we) • Possessive pronouns show ownership (his, hers, mine)

Pronoun- Examples q q They play basketball everyday. His friends love watching soccer. Those cupcakes are mine. We stand by the truth.

Preposition • A word that links nouns in a sentence • Often locates the noun

Preposition- Examples q q The dog is in the garden. The food is on the table. The taxi is next to Dan. My schoolbag is under the desk.

Verb • An action word • Usually, but not always, in its infinitive form (to run, to jump etc. )

Verb- Examples q Andrew loves to play the violin. q Sandra likes to cook. q Mr. Kaplan struggled to teach the material for the Math test. q Peter hates to learn for exams.

Conclusion Today we learned about the eight most commonly used parts of speech. We did this by giving example of the terms in different sentences.
