Particle Physics
Particle Physics The discipline in physics that helps provide an understanding of the multitude of particles that swarm our universe. Called the zoo of particles. Particles interact through 4 fundamental forces of nature.

History of Particles JJ Tompson – electrons Lord Rutherford – protons Chadwich – neutrons Cosmic Rays – 1912 – 1930 Subsequently, particle accelerators were developed to make cosmic rays in the lab.
Categorizing the Particles Fermions - a subatomic particle, such as a nucleon, that has halfintegral spin
Categorizing the Particles Hadrons - A hadron is any particle that is made from quarks, anti-quarks and gluons (the strong charge). Quarks - any of a number of subatomic particles carrying a fractional electric charge, postulated as building blocks of the hadrons undergoing the strong force. These make up protons and neutrons.
Protons and Neutrons A proton is made of two up quarks, a down quark, and a large number of gluons and of quark-antiquark pairs. + 2/3 +2/3 - 1/3 A neutron has one up quark and two down quarks in addition to its large number of gluons and of quark-antiquark pairs. -1/3 +2/3
Leptons - A lepton is an elementary, half-integer spin (spin 1⁄2) particle that does not undergo strong interactions. These are electrons and cousins. A neutrino - is a lepton, an elementary particle with half-integer spin, that interacts only via the weak subatomic force and gravity. Bosons – Force carrier particles.
Force Carriers Bosons – Force carrier particles.
Higgs Boson or What is the god particle. The elusive Higgs boson, thought to be responsible for giving matter its property of mass. The Higgs boson is part of many theoretical equations underpinning scientists understanding of how the world came into being.
Categorizing Particles Theoretical Dark Matter - Unseen matter that may make up more than ninety percent of the universe. As the name implies, dark matter does not interact with light or other electromagnetic radiation, so it cannot be seen directly, but it can be detected by measuring its gravitational effects. Hypotheticals Graviton - a hypothetical quantum of gravitational energy, regarded as a particle. Tachyon - a hypothetical particle that travels faster than light.
