Definition Seeks to involve other people… Could include subordinates, peers, superiors and other stakeholders (usually within immediate team) �This approach is also known as consultation, empowerment, joint decision-making, democratic leadership, Management By Objective (MBO) and powersharing.
Assumptions � People are more committed to actions where they were involved in the relevant decision-making, and the social commitment to one another is greater � People are less competitive and more collaborative when they are working on joint goals. � Several people deciding together make better decisions than one person alone.
Advantages & Disadvantages Advantages Disadvantages � allows for the development of � Need to spend more time additional leaders who can serve the organization at a later date ( people can express their creativity and talents, this then helps to benefit the work of the team) � Expands the range of possibilities for the team (points out strengths and weaknesses to an approach that may not have been seen by an individual) before an action is taken � Can be a sham when managers ask for opinions and then ignore them…. This could then lead to distrust and feelings of betrayal.
