Body Language Words are inadequate! When we connect with a person, we also have to make it clear to each other how the content of a spoken message needs to be interpreted. To make the meaning of our words clear we use body language. Body language is a language without spoken words and is therefore called non-verbal communication. Book 3 -Unit 8
Our understanding and use of non-verbal cues in facial expression are familiar to us nearly from birth. Book 3 -Unit 8

Suggested Points for Question 1 In Chinese culture, wolf-whistles are often used by young people to woo a girl in the street, usually considered as a culturally indecent manner of communication to a girl; or whistleblowing (with a whistle) is used during sports by a referee to signal his / her commands to the participants; or they can also be used by the police to direct the traffic, etc…. Reference Answers 1. When and where did the speaker discover the whistled speech? The speaker discovered the whistled speech while he was traveling in a remote area in Mexico the previous month. He found that some members of the tribe that live there use the whistled speech to communicate. Book 3 -Unit 8
2. How did Mr. Martinez and the corn seller communicate with each other? Instead of talking in words, they whistled to each other. In this way, they bargained over the price and came to an agreement satisfactory to both allowing Mr. Martinez to buy the seller’s corn. Book 3 -Unit 8
3. Why did the speaker decide to stay longer with Mr. and Mrs. Martinez? He decided to stay longer because he was very interested in the whistled speech and wanted to find more about it. Book 3 -Unit 8
4. What did the speaker finally find out about the whistled speech used in the community? He learned from Mr. Martinez that only men in their community use the whistled speech. It is used mostly for business purposes, for bargaining, buying and selling in the market place. Book 3 -Unit 8
