PART 2 OFUNIT 2 VOCABULARY
WORDS TO KNOW -Ordered Pair -Point of Intersection -Consistent -Inconsistent -Independent -Dependent -Slope -X-Intercept -Y-intercept -Domain -Range
ORDERED PAIR Two numbers written in a certain order. Usually written in parentheses like this: (4, 5) Can be used to show the position on a graph, where the "x" (horizontal) value is first, and the "y" (vertical) value is second.
POINT OF INTERSECTION The point at which two lines cross or meet
CONSISTENT A system of equations with at least one ordered pair that satisfies both equations.
INCONSISTENT A system that has no solution
INDEPENDENT A system of equations with exactly one solution
DEPENDENT A system of equations that has an infinite number of solutions; lines coincide when graphed
SLOPE The slope of a line is a number that measures its "steepness", usually denoted by the letter m. It is the change in y for a unit change in x along the line.
X-INTERCEPT The x-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the x axis. ( i. e. where the y value equals 0 ) x-intercept = ( x, 0 ) The point (-1, 0)
Y-INTERCEPT The y-intercept of a line is the point at which the line crosses the y axis. ( i. e. where the x value equals 0 ) y-intercept = ( 0, y ) The point (0, 1)
DOMAIN The x values The values of the independent variable The input values In the ordered pairs: (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 9), (6, 11) The domain is: 1, 3, 5, 6
RANGE The y values The values of the dependent variable The output values In the ordered pairs: (1, 2), (3, 4), (5, 9), (6, 11) The range is: 2, 4, 9, 11
