Let’s Review

What is a Computer? n A computer is an information processing machine. This means that computers changes information from one form into another by performing four basic functions - input, input processing, processing output, output and storage Computers require these four components to complete tasks.

What is a Computer System? A computer system is all the parts of a computer connected together. Computer + Hardware + Software = Computer System Peripherals peripherals – separate parts that can be added to a computer system expand the computer’s input, output, and storage capabilities.

What do computers do? n accept input n process data n store data n produce output These four components make up the information processing cycle.

Save it so that it can easily be accessed and modified. The main idea of the concept map will be ‘Computer Components’. Incorporate the image you created of a computer into the concept map. Add a topic to the main idea of ‘Information Processing Cycle”. Add four subtopics off of Information Processing Cycle – Input, Output, Processing and Storage.

Component #1 Input Processing Output Storage INPUT

Input n Input is the first component in the information processing cycle. Input is entering data into a computer.

What is an input device? Hardware used to enter data and instructions Ø

Input Devices Keyboard Mouse – pointing device Microphone – Digital Cameras speech recognition

Input from a Keyboard n Keyboard – main input device to communicate with the computer n Types – wired, wireless, foldable, portable, etc. n Standard keyboard has 101 keys – number of keys can vary depending upon the size of the keyboard

Input from a Mouse n Standard Two-Button – – – n n Left button for selecting Right button for properties Wheel for scrolling Trackball - Inverted mouse Early mice had a round ball and rollers – Disadvantage is rollers must be cleaned n Newer mice are OPTICAL – Often wireless and use LED and sensors to track movement

Input from Digital Cameras n n n Digital cameras do not use film Image is “put into” the camera by the user Pixel resolution is measured by numbers of dots Pixel resolution is key because more pixels mean better picture quality Digital cameras can store images on flash memory cards, memory sticks, floppy disks, internally, or no storage (web cams)

Input from Microphones n Simple input devices which allow you to talk into the computer. Your voice is converted to digital data bits.

Remember… An input device needs you to input the data. You input data by talking into the computer, typing on the keyboard, putting paper on the scanner, etc. It is all about your input.

Component #3 Input Processing Output Storage OUTPUT

Output n Output is the third component in the information processing cycle. Processing is the second component but you will learn about that in the next section. Output is the computer communicating to the user.

What is an output device? Ø Hardware that conveys information to one or more people

Output Devices Monitor Speakers Printer

Output using Printers generate output on paper. n Inkjet Printers – Tiny dots of ink used to generate images and text – Can print high quality photos n Laser Printers – Use a laser, plastic toner, and heat to generate images and text n Photo Printers – Specialize in photo printing using special papers and expensive inks

Output using Monitors display processing results on a screen. Cathode ray tube monitors v. Monitor is similar to a television. v. Big and bulky and becoming obsolete v. Inexpensive v. Good resolution and good pixel size v Flat-panel display monitors v. Liquid Crystal Display - LCD v. Uses liquid crystal diodes v. More expensive v. Prices are dropping quickly v

Output using LCD Projectors n LCD projectors are similar to monitors. n Project image on a wall or screen. n Used for business, education, and home theatre systems.

Output using Speakers n Speakers enable you to hear the results of sound processing. n Sounds you input into the computer, such as music, are heard as output.

Remember… An output device allows you to receive something from the computer such as a picture on the monitor, a sound from a speaker, or a printed piece from the printer. It is all about what you get from your interaction with the computer.

The Difference Between Input and Output n Input is you communicating with the computer. You are entering the data or message into the computer. n Output is the computer communicating back to you. The data or message is coming out of the computer.
