Private Adoption • Facilitated by a licensed adoption agency • One or both birth parents select the adoptive parents for their child or ask the agency to find a family for their child • The agency has approved applicants for the parents to choose from • Adoptive parents need to pass a home study • Birth parents must sign consents to adoption 48 hours after the birth of their child • The birth parents may withdraw their consent for 21 days after signing them • A lawyer is required
International Adoption • To adopt a child from another country, Manitoba residents must apply through a licensed adoption agency or a Child and Family Services Agency • Manitoba residents will pay fees to the agency, Citizenship and Immigration Canada and organizations in the child’s country ( $ range 20, 000 – 50, 000 depending on country) • An adoption social worker will supervise the placement for at least six months • A lawyer is not required
