Opioid Crisis • Athlete participate in activities that have a higher rate of injury than normal life. • High school athletes twice as likely to be prescribed opioid painkillers than their adolescent counter parts. • Issues • Pressure to return • Medicine prescribed longer than necessary • Create extra pills – overuse, addiction § Look for alternatives. Heroin • NCAA recommends these steps • 1. Reconsider the use of opioids. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen effectively control moderate pain and can significantly reduce even severe pain. 2. Prescribe opioids for a very limited time and write prescriptions for just the amount of time needed, usually just two or three days. 3. When prescribing these drugs, explain to the athlete and parent their potential, specifically the risks of addiction and overdose. 4. Avoid prescribing long-acting or extended release narcotics, which have greater potential for overdoses, particularly in opioid-naïve patients. 5. Monitor athletes on opioids.
Athletic Awards • Varsity Letters/Team Awards are handled by the individual coaching staffs – general rule for varsity letter is participation in half of varsity minutes (quarter/matches) SA Equipment Responsibility • Student-Athletes are responsible for care and return of all school equipment issued to them. • Students who do not return or has unaccounted for equipment may not be issued any new equipment in next seasons. AND will be financially responsible to replace.

NCAA Eligibility Center • Formerly the NCAA Clearinghouse • Register on-line at: https: //web 3. ncaa. org/ecwr 3/ • Student athletes should be communicating with their respective coach/athletic director if they are interested in participating in collegiate athletics for recruiting purposes. • In the end it is the student-athlete and their families responsibility make sure the proper courses are being taken to create NCAA
Cut Policy • Unfortunately, with a district as large as Shaler Area, it is unavoidable at times to refrain from cutting young people whose desire it is to be a member of an athletic team. • Our Coaches will make every effort to keep as many players as possible but also must take into account the viability of that number and player ability for progression of entire team. • Go to SOCIAL MEDIA shalerareatitans. com • TWITTER: @SASDtitans • Facebook: Shaler Area
