What is Reading? “A message-getting, problem-solving act which increases in power and flexibility the more it is practiced. “ Marie Clay
Reading is important because… • It enables children to access all areas of the curriculum independently • It is a life skill • Children who read often and read a wide range of books are better writers • It enables children to respond to comprehension questions and increase their understanding of a text on a deeper level • It broadens and deepens vocabulary • It enhances their knowledge and understanding of the world
Confident and Successful Readers… Are interested in reading Expect to understand what they are reading Know that there are different types of books (story books, information books, picture books, comics) Know they need to use a variety of reading strategies Realize when they have stopped understanding what they are reading Don’t give up if their first strategy is not successful Develop and grow new ideas about their reading Talk to others about the books they read
How did you learn to read? Talk to your neighbor about how you learned to read
Principles of the Workshop Model Matches readers to ‘just right’ literary texts Preserves large blocks of time for reading Provides students with specific feedback about process, book selection, strategy use, etc… Promotes inquiry and scholarly ‘talk’ about books Promotes community and collaboration Perpetuates a love of reading

First Reading Workshop Unit of Study: “Launching” Goals of the Unit: • Establish reading behaviors, rituals and routines for Reading Workshop. • Establish a community that fosters active listening, thinking, engagement, and participation in all aspects of a Reading Workshop. • Get to know ourselves and each other as readers • Setting goals for ourselves as readers and establishing an initial repertoire of strategies to further develop across the year.
Students will be reading an independent reading book at all times--this book may travel between home and school. You may also see students using their Reading Notebooks to gather and develop thinking about their reading.
Home/School Connection: • Talk to you child about his/her reading life. • What are you reading? Why did you select this text? • What are you thinking about as you are reading? • What are you reading next? • Talk with your child about your own self as a reader—your interests, habits and passions as a reader.
Show your child your love of reading!
Lifelong Readers • Readers choose what they want to read. • Readers talk about what they read with others. • Readers read a variety of texts. • Readers make sure they understand what they are reading.
