Gifted and Talented students are those that: require differentiated educational experiences beyond those normally provided by the regular school program These experiences will help them fulfill their potential toward increased contributions to the community, the state, the nation and the world. performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment

Texas State Plan for Gifted and Talented GT STUDENTS WILL: Self-direct learning, thinking, research, and communication Evidence this process by the development of advanced and innovative products and performances that are of professional quality Texas Education Agency Plan for the Gifted and Talented

GT Characteristics Bright Student: GT Student: Knows the answer Asks the questions Is interested Is highly interested Understands ideas Constructs abstractions Grasps the meaning Draws inferences Copies accurately Creates a new design Is nominated for awards Is referred for services

Referral Process Grades 1 -12: Teacher referral Parent referral Community member referral Kindergarten: All students assessed with parent consent

What Assessment Looks Like: GT Committee is made up of administrators, counselors and teachers with 30 hour required training in gifted and talented education. Committee considers all of the following for each student: Qualitative data Quantitative data Teacher and parent information Determination is made by the committee.

Transfer Students SGISD will honor identification of students as GT if they were identified in a previous district.

Appeal Process If committee decides a student is not eligible for GT services and programming, and parent is in disagreement, there is an appeals process outlined in the handbook.
