PARANG IN TRINIDAD

WHAT IS PARANG? v Parang comes from the Spanish word parranda which translates to the action of merry making, a group of serenaders. v In Trinidad it refers to the folkloric music of Hispanic American origins. v It is heard throughout Trinidad mainly during the Christmas season. v Individuals who sing Parang are called Parranderos

v The traditional lyrics of Parang which were sung in Spanish were mainly religious and Christian songs. v The traditional lyrics still exists today in Trinidad which explores and celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ. v There is also the existence of Soca-Parang in Trinidad which is the fusion of Soca, Calypso and Parang with lyrics in Trinidad Standard English, Trinidad English Creole and Spanish. http: //www. youtube. com/watch? v=AIIkwrz. TYPES OF PARANG SONGS v There § are different types of Parang songs, they are as follows: Serenal or Aguinaldo- Parranderos announce their arrival in song and seek to gain entry to the homes of families and friends to relate the story of the birth of Christ and to share in the joy of the message of peace on earth and goodwill to all men. § Nacimiento- A song about the birth of Christ § Guarapo- A song based on any topic. § Joropo- A song similar in style to the Spanish waltz. § Vals (Castillian)- A secular song with a slow waltz tempo.

§ Salsa- A Latin style of music. § Manzanare- A Venezuelan waltz celebrating different things about the Manzanare river of Cumana, Venezuela. § Estribillo- A very lively sing along song in which you call and answer. § Despedida- A song to give thanks for the joy of sharing and to say farewell to the host until the next Christmas.
