Introduction First section of a paragraph Includes the topic sentence Other sentences that give background information or provide a transition

Topic Sentence A single controlling idea of the paragraph

Body Follows the introduction Discusses the controlling idea Uses facts, arguments, analysis, examples, or other information

Conclusion Final section Summarizes the connections between the information discussed in the body and the paragraph's controlling idea

Organizing strategies

Cohesive Devices Repeat key words or phrases Create parallel structures Be cosistent in point of view, verb tense and number Use synomyms or near synonyms to avoid repetition Use transition words
