Explore the Windows 8 Start Screen When you turn on your computer, the Windows 8 operating system loads and the Windows 8 Start screen displays on your monitor. Ø The Windows 8 Start screen contains tiles you can use to open programs or access features within Windows 8. Ø Display all of the applications installed on your computer by rightclicking a blank area of the Start screen and then clicking the All apps icon that displays in the lower right corner of the screen. Ø Windows 8 includes a Charm bar containing five buttons you can use to perform tasks such as searching apps, sharing apps, and shutting down the computer. Explore the Windows 8 Desktop The Windows 8 desktop can be compared to the top of a desk in an office. Ø A person places necessary tools—such as pencils, pens, paper, files, or a calculator—on his or her desktop to perform functions. Ø Similarly, the Windows 8 desktop contains tools for operating the computer. These tools are logically grouped and placed in dialog boxes or windows that can be accessed using the icons located on the desktop.
