Explain the pattern of annual rainfall in the UK (3 marks) Rainfall is higher in the west of the United Kingdom because of warm wet air from the Atlantic Ocean being forced to rise over highland coastal areas such as Bodmin Moor which in turn cools and condenses on condensation nuclei (dust) in the atmosphere creating clouds. The constant flow of hot air (the Gulf stream) means that clouds get to heavy and burst causing as high as 2800 mm of precipitation to fall on the West of Great Britain. This cool air then descends and warms over the leeward side of the highlands creating a rainshadow and drier conditions (as low as 500 mm in the East)
