The First Humans n Homo Sapiens emerge 250, 000 years ago. n Small clans develop, and every generation moves 2 -3 miles. n World is populated around 10000 BCE n “Africa Theory” n All human development began in Africa, moved outward.
Hunter-Gatherer Societies n Paleo- Old Stone n Hunter-gatherers n Patterns develop n Form clans of 30 n Moved frequently n Rough gender equality n Women stayed closer to camp, while men hunted. n Adapting was necessary for survival.
Neolithic Revolution n 10000 -4000 BCE n Food is produced instead of gathered. n Animals domesticated over time. n Settled into communities. n These were still relatively nomadic.
Growth of Farming n Permanent settlements develop with better farming. n Catal Huyuk n Home placement n Food surplus leads to more time for leisure. n Polytheistic Religious traditions, “Mother Earth”.
Consequences n Settlement leads to trade, but also a need for protection. n Specialization of labor. n Men remained in the field, while women were relegated to household tasks. n Gender inequality develops. n Eventually, the patriarchal society and the need for protection would change the village.
