If an answer to a question is negative, two negative words must be used. � ¿Hablas español? �No, yo no hablo español. (No, I don’t speak Spanish. ) � ¿Siempre estudias? No, yo nunca estudio. � (No, I never study. ) In Spanish, every affirmative word has a negative counterpart.
You can form a negative statement two ways: 1. Put the negative word before the verb. � Nobody speaks. = Nadie habla. � Alfredo never dances. = Alfredo nunca baila. 2. Put the negative word after the verb. If you do this, you must also place “no” before the verb. Nobody speaks. = No habla nadie. Alfredo never dances. = Alfredo no baila nunca. � �
In Spanish, double negatives must be used. If one word is negative, everything must be negative. (This is different than our English rules. ) María doesn’t need anything.
