INTRODUCTION: • The Pakistan Meteorological Department is both a scientific and a service department, and functions under the Ministry of Defence. It is responsible for providing meteorological service throughout Pakistan to wide variety of interest and for numerous public activities and projects with require weather information. • In its services to aviation the department’s responsibility goes to some extent beyond national boundaries in fulfillment of accepted international agreements and obligations which include, among other things, the collection and rebroadcast of meteorological data.

• Apart from meteorology, the department is also concerned with a network of observing station to generate Marine Meteorology data. • Meteorological office to analyse data for issuing forecasts for shipping.

ACHIEVEMENTS: • The Pakistan Meteorological Department, at the time of its establishment in 1947, inherited only 15 Meteorological Observatories from the Central Meteorological Organization then operating in the Subcontinent. • The Department with its continuous efforts has improved weather forecasting capabilities by expanding the network of meteorological observatories, developing methods of observation. • The Department has also played vital role in research work and its scientists have made valuable contribution. • More than 300 scientific papers have been written and published in both national and international scientific journals including oceanographic activates and ship observation.

Marine Meteorological section Kemari. • This section established in 1975. Brief the operations of this section are as under. • Marine Meteorological section is responsible for the collection of Marine Meteorological data from different volunteer merchant vessels. • About 7000 volunteer merchant vessels observing meteorology and surface oceanography. • Over more 20000 ship observation received from V. O. S annually. • This section also responsible for issuing the harbor Met. Report to different Marine agencies

• Provide the technical assistance and help for calibration and installation of Meteorological instrument on different kind of commercial and volunteer observation ship. • Marine forecast provided in written form to the various user agencies. • Marine bulletin for fisherman are provided to all user agencies.

• Prepared the morning fleet forecast for the area B 00, B 30, B 25, B 20. • Prepared the Marine Meteorological bulletin for area 1 X issued on daily basis to INMARSAT COASTAL EARTH STATION (CES)+ Perth Australia. MUHAMMAD ARIF KHAN METEOROLOGIST
