Social Skills Group n Burger East Men’s Club – a Tier 2 intervention for

Social Skills Group n Burger East Men’s Club – a Tier 2 intervention for adult male students with ASD. n 2011 -2012 – Second full year of PBIS implementation at Burger School. ¨ 10 students were recommended by staff members as having a need to develop better skills in the areas of: ¨ Social etiquette ¨ Personal hygiene ¨ Conflict resolution ¨ Transition/Life after Burger

Men’s Club program objectives n Provide students with an opportunity to interact and ask

Men’s Club program objectives n Provide students with an opportunity to interact and ask sensitive questions in a safe, non -judgmental setting. n Reinforce the Burger PBIS expectations n Provide students with a better awareness of proper personal hygiene n Discuss and simulate real-life events that students will need to practice. ¨ Personal space, expressing feelings without aggression, working/getting along with others

Staff investment & time n The Men’s Club meets each Friday morning for 30

Staff investment & time n The Men’s Club meets each Friday morning for 30 minutes with an adult mentor from the PBIS committee. n Once the topic of discussion or lesson is introduced, the students can often facilitate the meeting. n Men’s Club members have become leaders and advocates for the Burger East PBIS program. n By providing the students with more intensive coaching, they become better aware and knowledgeable of PBIS, and become active members of the PBIS process.

What we’ve accomplished so far…… A lot of hygiene discussion n Students were introduced and began meeting in December, 2011. Each week, a different lesson and activity is presented. n The group begins every meeting by shaking each members hand. While making eye contact, they must say hello or good morning. n The Men’s Club has: hosted a session for a bully prevention presentation ¨ Planned, designed, budgeted, and hosted the April 2012 PBIS assembly. ¨ Begun to plan for building improvement projects (creating a garden) ¨ n Interest in the group is increasing. Many students are asking to join the group ¨ Many staff members are referring students ¨ A second social skills group is in the planning stages for students needing more intensive intervention. ¨
