What is Pack it in, Pack it Out? • Trash and litter have no place in the backcountry. It is a simple commitment to pack out all that we pack in • Why? People come to wildlands to enjoy them in their natural state. We all have a responsibility to anticipate and reduce our social impact upon others and to be considerate towards the wildland environment and its animal inhabitants

What is Litter? • Cigarette Butts, Soda Cans, Beer Bottles, Plastic Bags, Gum Wrappers and other various items you may see on the road, alongside a fence or in an empty lot • When people throw things from their car, drop things on the ground, or even if someone aims for a garbage can and misses, then they are littering

Problems Caused By Litter • When litter ends up on sidewalks or in storm drains d/t a heavy rain it eventually ends up in a nearby river or ocean and polluting the water. Therefore, the water can no longer be used for drinking • Animals may mistake the litter food and choke or get entangled in it • Litter is dirty and carries germs. Animals may eat it and then get other animals or humans sick • Litter wastes natural resources because it should be reused or recycled

What Can You Do? • If you see a piece of litter, pick it up and throw it away into a garbage can • Recycle anything that can be recycled • Compost!

Activity (10 minutes) Contest: Each Tribe will be collecting garbage in 5 to 10 minutes. The Tribe that collects the most garbage will win a prize! Rules: 1. Use care when picking up sharp, rusty waste 2. Do not pick up any unsanitary waste or anything from a garbage can 3. Wear Gloves
