Route vs Actual Tracks Shindig Cinnabar
Boat & Systems Monitor all systems: Fuel - use motor to get to wind; run at reduced 'economy' setting; have fuel to motor ~500 nm range (or 3 -4 days) + reserve Power & Energy Management (engine, solar, wind) Water – making or collecting Cinnabar fuel tank repair just 2 weeks before departure. Thanks Cross Marine!!!
Daily Inspections Daily checks around boat for wear and tear. Loose or random things on deck. Look for chafing on lines, sails, everything. Listen for new or changed noises. Right - fixing the clanging wire loom inside the mast. Stop the noise!
Daily Inspections Nope, not fishing. Just picking up the flying fish during the morning inspection.
Crew Welfare Watch Schedule 2017 - Designed to accommodate radio scheds, meal prep, navigation so that everyone gets sufficient rest. Practice excellent hygiene, prevent staph infections. Stay healthy – manage seasickness, hydration, first-aid, etc.
Crew Welfare Not so routine: catching a fish. (We like hand lines. ) The crew always looks forward to a good meal. (In this case fresh wahoo. )
Sail Handling Cinnabar - reefed mainsail before nightfall. You will reef a lot. Plan for lumpy conditions, cross swell. Preventers help control mainsail. Balance sails to control overload of steering, AP, rudder. Heave To. Shindig – downwind config with spinny and poled out jib.
Navigation Tools Don’t rely on just one piece of navigational equipment.
Navigation Tools • Primary - PC-based plotter SW (Expedition), C-Maps – SAS Planet (free) - for satellite imagery – PC-based Open CPN (free) – CM 93, NZ HO charts. • Secondary - Older Raymarine plotter + C-Maps • Backup – Tablet-based i. Sailor app (free – i. OS + Android). Then purchase charts package, all So Pac = $38. • Backup - Paper Charts – Wide area, small scale, for main cruising regions.
Navigation – We like high tech but we also use old school. We use large-area (smallscale) charts because no matter their size, they always show hard obstructions to navigation (no zoom/hiding issues). Watch out for islands (Clarion) and U/W sea mounts.
