Today’s Project- Frog Block Print • Look at “Frog Girl” – a PNW Coastal story about frogs • Draw on paper • Trace on foam • Print on notecards • Package as a gift
Nature in Art • PNW Coastal art uses stylized animals and simple, bright colors • Decorates functional and decorative objects • Used in traditional and high fashion!
Stylized Frogs
Step 1 - Select a style of frog
Step 2 - Simplify design • Is there symmetry to your design? • Draw a line for basis of symmetry
Step 3 - Draw basic shapes • What shapes do you see? • Cirlces, ovals • Triangles • S curves
Step 4 - Draw detailed shapes • Fill in shapes with details • Mouth • Webbed feet
Step 5 - Trace onto foam • Center drawing on foam. • Trace, starting with center shapes • Press firmly to make an impression in the foam • It is ok if breaks through paper a little
Step 6 - Retrace • Go over lines again • Some shapes (like circles) should be done in 2 strokes so foam doesn’t bunch • Make some lines thicker • Fill some shapes in (keep strokes parallel)
Step 7 - Add initials & trim • Draw your initials BACKWARDS into the foam in a discreet place • Write initials on scratch paper and trace with pen • Turn paper over to see reversed letters • If needed, you can trim off the edges of foam to center your animal Oops! I forgot to make mine backwards - but don’t you forget!
Step 8 - Brayer and Ink • Go to inking station • Watch adult before trying on your own • Roll ink onto foam • Must be consistent amount of ink- should just be able to see ripples of ink • Center on card, press, starting in center, then all around • Peel up carefully from the corner Too little Just right Too much
Step 9 - Dry and bundle • Stand cards up and set aside to dry • When they are dry, bundle cards together and tie up with twine
