Born Pablo Diego Jose Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno Maria de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santisima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso in Malaga, Spain on October 25, 1881
• • • Picasso’s first word was “piz, ” a shortening of lapiz, the Spanish word for pencil He learned to draw before he could walk At age 5 his mother caught him using a nail to scratch drawings of animals on the living room walls At school a teacher got upset with him for painting the sky red instead of blue His father was an artist and art teacher who taught Picasso figure drawing and oil painting from the age of 7 Le Picador by Picasso, age 9
• By the age of 13, Picasso’s father was convinced he would become a famous painter. • He was admitted into the Royal Academy of Art in Barcelona • At age 16 he moved to Madrid, where he studied the works of many famous painters, including Velazquez, Goya, El Greco, and Caravaggio. • At age 19, Picasso moved to Paris with his friend, the artist Carlos Casagemas.

• After his friend Carlos died, Picasso entered what is known as his “Blue Period. ” • Picasso was very poor during this time. • He painted many portraits of poor and elderly people in shades of muted blues and grays. • Many of the portraits look very flat and thin, with elongated limbs. Picasso’s African Period • 1906 -1909 in Paris • Strongly influenced by African sculptures, especially masks • Europeans were very interested in Africa at this time • African art was brought to Paris and displayed in museums • Inspired Picasso’s next period: Cubism
