Pablo Picasso *Born in Spain *First painting at age 9 *Invented Cubism: a form of painting that uses simple shapes to represent reality
These paintings are all self-portraits of Picasso, which clearly show the progression of his style. How did his style change from when he was 15 to 89?
CUBISM Can you see how Cubism uses simple shapes to show real things in different ways? Also, Cubism often shows objects from more than one angle at once.
More examples of Picasso’s portraits using shapes, multiple angles of the same subject, and bright colors
Student Example: What do you notice? Do you think the student really had three eyes and a different colored nose (and extra nose on the side)? Your self-portrait will not capture what you look like in the mirror. Instead, you should capture qualities about yourself. Or draw one side of your face happy and the other sad or angry.
Student Examples of Our Project:
Picasso Self Portrait 1. Draw a funny shaped head on the side of your bag without the Kroger logo OR draw a line with a nose (or two) down the center of your bag to divide your portrait into two halves. 2. Draw things in funny places: eyes, nose, mouth, ears, neck, hair, shirt. Try to show your face from different angles, like Picasso. 3. Color in with oil pastels in unrealistic colors. Use the colors to show emotion or something about yourself. 4. Take class photo wearing your selfportraits.
