P 3 Options Program Parcells Middle School Holli Mc. Nally Tim Van. Eckoute Brian Mc. Donald Chris Geerer
The Options Program is part of P 3 • Panther Pride Program • Weekly 40 minute discussions with students – Focus on direct instruction of expected behaviors – Rewards – Pep Assemblies – No bullying allowed • Creates a sense of pride in the school • Creates a common language • Creates a common set of expectations
What is the Options Program? • Based on Glasser’s choice theory • Used for classroom behaviors only • Requires students and teachers to identify incorrect behaviors • Requires students and teachers to identify correct behaviors • Requires students and teachers to create plans for students to practice correct behaviors • Provides consequences if plans are not followed
How does it work? • Three levels: § Option Level 1: Verbal § What are you doing? § What should you be doing? § In place for that class period § Option Level 2: Written § Student fills out Level 2 form in binder. Teacher checks when convenient. § What were you doing? § What should you have been doing? § In place for one week in that class.
Option Level 3 § If a student breaks the written Level 2 plan within one week, the student is sent to the Options Room with the Level 2 worksheet. § Tim or Brian will work with the student to complete the Level 3 worksheet and make a parent phone call. § The Level 3 plan stays in place for two weeks for that classroom. § Students who break the Level 3 plan within two weeks will be sent back to the Option Room, where they may be written up for an office referral.
Options Program Flowchart Level One – Verbal, in classroom – In place for one class period What are you doing? What should you be doing? Level Two – Written, in classroom – In place for one week What are you doing? What should you be doing? Level 3 – Written, in Options Room – In place for two weeks More detailed reflection sheet and phone call home Teacher deducts one Pride Point. Teacher will receive completed sheet from Options Room staff Level 4 – If student breaks Level 3 plan within two weeks – Send to Options Room. Will result in Office Referral. Teacher will deduct Pride Points as instructed by Office Referral Form.
What should you be doing? Here are some ideas: • KHFAAOOTY – Keep hands, feet, and all other objects to yourself. • RT 4 – Resist the temptation to talk. • NBC – No bodily contact. • Raise your hand to talk. • Listen when others are called upon to speak. • Do your own work. • Sit in your seat ready to learn. • Use equipment appropriately. • Use a 12 -inch voice.
The Beauty of the Options Program § Focus is on behaviors, not individuals. § “You are choosing the wrong behavior” is much different from “You are driving me crazy!” § Fits well with P 3 plans to teach our behavior matrix. § Repeated, consistent, direct instruction of correct behaviors allows students to improve. § Allows you to TEACH: § No more sending kids into the hallway to sit until you have time to deal with them. § No more long, drawn-out arguments in class. § Takes minimal time away from other students. § Students learn the program and respond quickly. § All teachers must use the same language and procedures.
The Pitfalls of the Options Program § Will not work if all teachers don’t use the program consistently. § We must use the same language and procedures: § What are you doing? What should you be doing? § Follow the levels. § You can’t just snap and send a kid to the Options Room. § You have to work through the levels and use the language.
When to use the Options Program § In the classroom § For mildly disruptive or distracting behaviors § § § Talking Out of seat Speaking out of turn Irritating other students Any minor behavior that distracts self or others from learning
When NOT to use the Options Program § Outside of the classroom (hallway, lunchroom). § For work habit issues (not having homework, pencils/books, etc. ) § When the behavior is serious or dangerous (Tier 3? ) use an office referral immediately: § § Fighting Bullying Threatening Complete refusal to cooperate or discuss behavior
