P 16665 – Gleason Force Applicator Senior Design Project Team Members Project Statement: • The hobbing process is a method of generating gears where both workpiece and machine tool rotate simultaneously. The stiffness of the hobber is has a great influence on the quality of the final product. Currently, the device used to test stiffness is: o Limited to force application in one direction o Tedious to test o Not ergonomically efficient • Our project is to address these limitations with the goals of: o 3 dimensional measurement o Quick setup and automated use o Sound ergonomic design Solution: Gleason’s Current Force Application Process • Nicholas Cocca • Vincent Forrester • Adel Yasin • Final device contains the following features: o 4140 pre-hard steel in all areas where a load is being applied o Clamping fixture attached to arbor o Ball joint located at workpiece o Sliding fixture to allow for ease of manipulating position o Inclinometer and rotary encoder measure position in axis o Hydraulic ram system to apply load o Load cell to measure applied load o GUI system for ease of use and output measurements Engineering Requirements: • Peter Hajosch • Joseph Schmitt • Guide: Gary Werth (not pictured) Final Design: GUI System Outputs: Concept Development and Selection: Conclusion and Recommendations for Future Projects: Schmitt Box Pivol Swivet Conclusion: • Met all customer and engineering requirements • Customer is highly satisfied Considerations for future Gleason Force Applicator projects: • Develop testing apparatus to measure dynamic load Considerations for all projects: • Use your guide as much as possible, touch base even when things are running smoothly • Double and triple check measurements and drawings • Work ahead of the academic calendar • Buy high quality electronics Sponsors and Acknowledgements Final Design Concept Exploded View Sponsor: Scan the QR code below to learn more about our project! with Mike Walker, Senior Mechanical Project Engineer Acknowledgements: • Dr. Rui Liu, KGCOE ME Assistant Professor • Rob Kraynik, Jan Maneti, and Craig Piccarreto in the machine shop
