What is an LVAD? • LVAD is a Left Ventricular Assistive Devise • LVAD is implanted into the Left Ventricular of the heart and is used to help circulate the blood throughout the body • They are mechanical pumps with 1 to 5 years of use *Source Senior Design Team 09021
Why are they important? • Coronary heart disease affects 16, 800, 000 • • people Claimed 864, 480 lives in 2005 35. 3 percent of all deaths or 1 of every 2. 8 deaths The single leading cause of death in America today The use of LVAD’s can help reduce these numbers *American Heart Association
Mission Statement Overview: The Test Loop is going to be used to: • Test blood damage • Create pump performance curves (pressure vs. flow) • Mimic human circulatory system • Automated control of the pressure in the loop • Maintain blood temperature Goals: • Increase sensor capability and sensitivity • Identify flaws / problems that the previous teams have been suffering • Fit and Finish Final Goal: • Understand how the LVAD being tested is affecting the blood • Determine the characteristics of the LVAD
