Minco Project Statement: This project entailed the design, development, and construction of a test bed, with integrated data acquisition, and test procedures for the RIT Baja SAE Team to accurately assess the performance of their Briggs and Stratton Model 20 competition required engine, in an effort to remain competitive and optimize the rest of their drive system. Design Selection & Functionality: System – M. E. Dyno Lab: To meet engine testing capabilities and to ensure accurate repeatable results it was decided adaptation to an existing on campus engine dynamometer developed by MSD project P 06112 was the best choice. Fully Adjustable Stand: Primary function is to adapt the engine to the Dyno table mounting plate with consideration of the following needs: • • Robust & stable to withstands vibrations Ease of tilt adjustment while maintaining driveline geometry Quick mount and dismount time Low cost Drive – Hub, Sprockets, & Chain: Connects the Siemen's DC Motor output shaft with the output shaft of the test engine while offering: • High single step reduction to facilitate dynamic ranges • Bolt on, quick change out time • Low cost & fast lead time Data Acquisition & Sensors: Capacity to monitor & log several engine parameters requested by Baja. • Chose, obtained, troubleshot, & validated sensors • Lab. VIEW GUI with data logging & formatted outputs Results & Conclusions: Outcome: This project successfully provided the BAJA SAE team with a robust driveline test system to accurately observe, log and graph the following engine parameters with good repeatability: • • • Engine HP, Torque, RPM – Dyn Loc-IV & Siemens DC Motor Cylinder Pressure – KISTLER & PCB pressure sensors Air/Fuel Ratio – Innovate LM-2 Kit with wideband 02 sensor Intake Air Flow Rate – Dwyer Air Velocity Transmitter Fuel Flow Rate – Back calculated from air flow & air/fuel ratio Temperatures: Oil, Cooling Fins, Carburetor Bowl, Intake Air, and Exhaust Gas – Ungrounded K-type thermocouples Acknowledgements: • Chris De.
