Some young people travel abroad to volunteer in remote locations and under-developed countries. While this kind of ‘voluntourism’ is popular, it is important to make sure that the money and time travellers spend to take part in these programmes is actually helping the needy, rather than providing unnecessary services or lining the pockets of unscrupulous individuals. For example, when the plight of Cambodian orphans attracted aid from the international community, more orphanages sprang up across the country, some of which were later found to be housing ‘orphans’ who in fact had living parents. It changed Axel’s life by giving him access to a word-processing program and a voice output system, enabling him to break down his wall of isolation. Because of this device, Axel is able to go to school, make speeches and write assignments. To Axel, this communication device is more than just a machine; it is an extension of his body.
