EFB Airborne Own-ship Principles • Requires “Concurrent Use” – EFB Inflight own-ship will always be considered a “secondary” display – Aircraft must have an operationally similar “primary” system installed as part of type design • Example: EFB can depict own-ship position on a chart if the certified navigation display has the functionality to depict ownship position with respect to flight plan • Requires “Differentiation” – Pilot must readily be able to distinguish the “secondary” EFB function from the “primary” installed system Federal Aviation Administration 3
Position Sources • Recommend, but not require using installed GNSS source • Allow commercial-off-the-shelf GPS for secondary use – Operator is responsible for ensuring accurate and reliable position source (FAA not involved in qualification or management) – Integral or non-integral to EFB – Provide guidance on selection issues Federal Aviation Administration 4
Training for EFB Own-Ship • Must cover EFB purpose & limitations – Own-ship is for secondary use only to support situation awareness – Primary reference is always installed avionics – Importance of error reporting to improve overall system and safety Federal Aviation Administration 5
