Overview of Power System

What is Power System? An electric power system is a network of electrical components deployed to supply, transfer, store, and use electric power. An example of an electric power system is the grid that provides power to an extended area. Power System: Generating Station: supply the power Transmission: carries the power from the generating centers to the load centers Distribution: feeds the power to nearby homes and industries.

What is the need of Power System Basic need & Powerful tool for the economic development and improvement in the standard of living of the people that depends on the adequate supply of Electrical Energy • This diagram which is a typical system load profile. • The system load is never constant, it keeps on changing at different times.

Power System Network

Complex Power Apparent power (Complex power) (S) [VA] – S=VI*=P+j. Q – Real power P [W] – Reactive Power Q(VAR) THE POWER TRIANGLE A graphical method of obtaining the overall P, Q, and phase angle for several loads in parallel. A power triangle can be drawn for an inductive load

Subscript Notation The convenient method used in circuit diagram for Polarity mark (+ or -) An arrow ( ) Single Subscript Notation: for single phase system Double Subscript Notation: for three phase system

Single Line Diagram power system network is a complicated electrical networks. we always deal with 3 phase networks. All the lines are 3 phases means, each power circuit consists of three conductors. conventional diagram: all the connections is going to be very complicated In power engineering, a one-line diagram or single-line diagram (SLD) is a simplified notation for representing a three-phase power system.

SLDs uses single line to represent all the three phases. SLDs also called as one line diagram. It show the relative electrical interconnections of various components. Such as generators, transformers, transmission and distribution lines, loads, circuit breakers, and all these components which go in to make the power system network
