What is Ovarian Cancer? ▪ Cancer starts when the cells in the body begin to grow out of control, this means any cell could potentially become cancer. This also means that the cells can spread easily to other parts of the body. ▪ Ovarian cancer starts in the ovaries. Women have two ovaries attached to each side of the uterus. The ovaries are in charge of producing the eggs for reproduction as well as production of estrogen and progesterone.
Types of Ovarian Tumors ▪ Many of the tumors that start in the ovaries can either be benign (not cancer) or cancerous (malignant). Benign means it will never spread past the ovary and treatment just requires the removal of the ovary. Cancerous will spread and has different treatment. ▪ 1. Epithelial Tumors: These are tumors that start with the cells in the outer surface of the ovary. Most ovarian tumors are this type. ▪ 2. Germ Cell Tumors: These are tumors that start from the cells that produce the eggs in the ovary. ▪ 3. Stromal Tumors- These are tumors that start from the cells that hold the ovary itself together. These cells also produce estrogen and progesterone.
Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer ▪ Bloating ▪ Pelvic or abdominal pain ▪ Trouble eating or feeling dull to quickly ▪ Urinary symptoms such as urgency or frequency ▪ Fatigue ▪ Upset stomach ▪ Back Pain ▪ Pain during sec ▪ Menstrual changes ▪ Abdominal swelling and weight loss
Statistics About Ovarian Cancer Ovarian cancer kills almost all its victims. It comes back after the first treatment in 80 percent of women, according to the National Cancer Institute. It will be diagnosed in more than 21, 000 American women this year and it will kill more than 14, 000.
Treatments for Ovarian Cancer - Surgery: This is the main treatment for most ovarian cancers. The amount of surgery you will need is the amount of cancer in the ovaries. It could be possible to treat without the removal of ovaries and uterus but sometimes no. Surgery has 2 main goals: staging an debulking. - Chemotherapy: For ovarian cancer chemo is usually a combination of 2 drugs given every 3 -4 weeks through an IV. It seems to be more effective to give a combination of 2 drugs instead of one when treating this cancer. - Hormone Therapy: This is the use of hormones or hormone-blocking in order to fight ovarian cancer. This is a treatment more common for ovarian stromal tumors and not epithelial ovarian cancer. - Radiation Therapy: This is the high use of x-rays to kill cancer cells. This treatment is rarely used in the US fro ovarian cancer. Many side effects occur upon using this treatment.
New Research Helping Women with Ovarian Cancer! An experimental treatment that trains a woman's immune system to target her own ovarian tumors has helped at least 20 women live longer and might point to a way to manage one of the most deadly cancers out there. And even older cancer drugs might help women live longer with ovarian cancer, researchers told a meeting Saturday. Avastin, used for a range of cancers, added a valuable five months on average to women's lives without as many side effects, including deadly stomach bleeding, as was feared. Neither treatment cured the patients. But both reports, presented at a meeting of the Society of Gynecologic Oncology on Saturday, offer some much-needed hope for the highly lethal cancer.
