WWII Comes to an End • WWII ends in Europe when Germany surrenders. • The United Nations was created after WWII. It replaced the League of Nations. It is an international organization to keep world peace and help developing nations. There is a military to enforce rules and only 2/3 have to agree.

What happens to Germany now? East Berlin: • Instead of blaming Germany and making Germany pay for WWII, the Allied Powers (USA, Great Britain, France, and the USSR) decide to help rebuild Germany and control parts of German land. Controlled by USSR Controlled by USA, France, and Britain. East Berlin is controlled by the USSR and West Berlin is controlled by the USA, France, and Great Britain.

Origins of the Cold War • The USA goal was to spread democracy and stop communism. • Democracy means the people have the power because they vote for their leaders. • The USSR goal was to spread communism (idea where everyone shares equally in wealth) • This split amongst European nations became known as the Iron Curtain. Countries in Western Europe were democratic while countries in Eastern Europe were communist.
