Our strategic conclusion…… It is recognised that our efforts in the Urban WASH context are limited at present although the increasing demand need for WASH services for the urban poor and the most vulnerable is widely acknowledged, and in both Emergency & Development contexts.

What are the demographics? • One in 7 of the worlds population live in ‘Urban informal settlements’ • Asia and the Pacific is the world’s most rapidly urbanizing region, with an urbanization rate of 3 per cent. By 2018, half of the region’s population will be urban – more than 1. 2 billion people, or one-third of the world’s urban population - 6 out of the world’s 10 mega-cities are in East Asia, • In Africa, Mozambique, Maputo accounts for 83 per cent of the country’s urban population, while the figures for Dakar, Lome, Kampala and Harare 65, 60, 52 and 50 per cent respectively. Mega cities in the making. • In Caribbean and Latin America, estimates suggest that 60 percent of the poor (113 million people) and half the extreme poor (46 million people) live in urban areas out of a total population of 650 Million People. Urban WASH TWG Update and Report to Plenary History and milestones of the TWG: • Formed in 2016 with British, Danish, Finnish, French, Kenya, Netherlands, Nepal, Philippines RCS and IFRC WASH Team. • With consultant developed Urban WASH ‘Strategic Direction’ concluded August 2017 in Kenya. • TWG Opened up to all interested NS’s and Manila chosen as next meeting venue. Key Decisions taken in Kenya Meeting: • IFRC to establish a staff on loan to focus on Urban WASH • ‘Strategic Direction’ document to be revised to a ‘Technical Guidance Note’ • Ethiopia Pilot Project established. • Steering Group should be formed. • Joint RM and Programming to scale-up is the intention. • Choose Target city or cities?

Reality check………… • Urban demands, both short term and long term, continue. • From

Reality check………… • Urban demands, both short term and long term, continue. • From IFRC side, we need a dedicated person to provide momentum. • We need to form the NS steering group and seek some ‘seed funding’. • A joint RC/RC & IFRC ‘pilot to scale’ is one possible way forward. • Meanwhile capture lessons learned and experience from the RC/RC Family. • Interest remains high from NS’s however limited progress so far. • To discuss further as our meeting progresses.
