OUR SOLAR SYSTEM Our solar system By Joey
OUR SOLAR SYSTEM ØOur solar system By Joey Quattrini includes 8 different planets. ØThe solar system is very, very big. You could say massive also. ØThe solar system has cold planets and warm planets.
The Sun ØThe sun is the star that keeps our planet warm and bright. ØAll the other planets orbit around the sun. ØThe sun will burn out in about 100 billion years.
Mercury ØMercury is the closest planet to the sun. ØNo human can live on Mercury because it is hot enough to melt lead. ØMercury is about the size of Earth’s moon.
Venus ØVenus is about as big as Earth. ØIt is one of the brightest planets in the solar system. ØVenus has volcanoes, mountains, and craters.
Earth ØEarth is the planet we live on. ØEarth is the only planet with life on it in our solar system. ØIt has more water than land.
Mars ØMars looks fiery red down on Earth. ØMars diameter is only half of Earth’s. ØMars may have had water on it’s surface.
Asteroid Belt ØThe asteroid belt separates the inner planets from the outer planets. ØIt is made of lots of asteroids. ØThe asteroid belt is very big.
Jupiter ØJupiter is the largest planet in our solar system. ØIt has a diameter that is 11 times the diameter of Earth. ØJupiter has a giant storm on it.
Saturn ØSaturn has rings that are visible from Earth with a telescope. ØSaturn has 31 moons. ØIt has no solid surface.
Uranus ØUranus is a gas giant. ØIt rotates on its side as it orbits the sun. ØUranus has at least 27 moons.
Neptune ØNeptune has at least 13 moons. ØIt is one of the windiest places in our solar system. ØIt’s atmosphere is mainly hydrogen and helium.
The Dwarf Planet Pluto ØPluto is farthest from the sun. ØIt is very, very cold on Pluto. ØPluto is called a dwarf planet because it is too small to be a planet.
Telescope ØTelescopes are used to look at stars and planets. ØYou can’t see the surface of a planet though. ØTelescopes can see very far in the sky.
Universe ØThe universe is everything that exists in space. ØThere are millions of galaxies in the universe. ØThere also millions of stars.
Constellations ØConstellations are pictures in the stars. ØOne constellation you might know is the big dipper. ØAnother one is the little dipper.
Galaxy ØGalaxies are systems of stars, gas, and dust. ØThere are many galaxies in the universe. ØGalaxies are huge.
Orbit ØEarth orbits around the sun. ØAll the other planets orbit around the sun too. ØIt takes Earth 1 year to orbit around the sun.
Rotate ØIt takes Earth 1 day to rotate on it’s axis. ØRotate means to spin around. ØEarth rotates to get night and day.
Axis ØEarth tilts on it’s axis. ØThat is why seasons change. ØAn axis is an imaginary line that goes through both poles of the Earth.
Moon ØThe moon is a small planet like body that orbits the Earth. ØThe moon has many craters. ØSome of the other planets have moons too.
Star ØA star is a huge ball of superheated gases. ØThere are many stars in the solar system. ØStars make up constellations.
Asteroid ØAsteroids make up the asteroid belt. ØSome asteroids hit Earth. ØSome don’t hit Earth.
Moon Phases ØThe moon phases are the shapes the moon seems to have. ØOne phase is the full moon. ØAnother phase is the new moon.
Comet ØThere are many comets. ØComets are like asteroids and meteors. ØIt looks like comets have a trail of light.
THANKS FOR WATCHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
