(1) Student participation in medical education development has an essential value. Medical students and faculties benefit from this interaction mutually. Students and student unions are working for better medical education by different methods. Local and National Workshops run by students are one of the most popular platforms for Medical Education discussions Picture 1 – Stakeholders of Education 2 OBJECTIVES and METHODOLOGY 1) Selected Benefits of National Workshops : - Bringing medical students together for change - Driving students to think about problems of medical education centered around theme - Informing students about what the faculty members and specialists on the issue - Informed students are a source of change makers for local faculty development. - Seeing the changes proposed put into the curriculum established new means of connection between faculty and student - Faculty members were also content with the recommendations proposed in endreports. 2) Selected Pitfalls of National Workshops : - Some of the recommendations were unrealistic - It is difficult to find a consensus on some recommendations - End products are not proffessional papers, - Inability to reach all medical schools and students, although the majority was represented. - Although much effort to provide a diverse and representative environment is present, the group attending the workshop does not necessarily represent whole student population. SELECTED IDEAS PRESENTED OBJECTIVES Our objectives were: - Reflecting on what medical students think and want - Creating an awareness of Medical education problems - Making a bridge between students and change leaders in a professional manner - Taking active place in Medical Education discussions - Proving a point that medical students play a big role in leading the change METHODOLOGY In every year, a project team of students are selected by representatives of local student leaders from 71 medical faculties. The team consists 5 -10 students from various faculties. The team selects three theme options based on: - Current trends in medical education - Current health policies - Medical students’ proposals and ideas « Expectation questionnaires could be given at the start of each curricular bloc, which may foster the communication between student and faculty » « Ethics education should be done with groups of no more than fifteen students, using case studies and interactions with real volunteer patients » « Evaluation of SP trainings should be done by feedbacks from peers and faculty members, rather than MCQs or written exams » « Faculties should allow their students to use scientific databases via institutional subscription » « Students must be more allowed and encouraged to work on present research facilities of their institution » « Appropriate, active and informative carreer development units must be set up within universities that interact with student one-by-one and in groups. » « Sign language lessons might be given to improve the communication between deaf patients and doctors. » Sivas Then, three options are put into public voting, a voting open for all medical students in Turkey. The option that has most votes is selected as that years’ theme. Presentations. com Seven years of Medical Education Workshop proved itself beneficial in many areas of faculty development, concerning but not limited to: - Student Engagement - Student Participation - Two way Feedback mechanism - Change leadership Our aim with this presentation is to demonstrate one way of how the students work to improve their representation. And ultimately, the goal is for the medical faculties to hold their own local medical education workshops. With seven years of experience, We believe that student-run gatherings of medical education are a way to add to curriculum reform process, if intended to be heard by responsible people, this can foster the change you need for a faculty, while minimizing the negative possible reactions could be faced in the future of change.
