Remember from last week… • Evangelium Vitae states very strongly that: “whatever is opposed to life…” including “disgraceful working conditions, where people are treated as mere instruments of gain rather than free and responsible persons… poisons human society. ”
Today we are looking at business Business can range from one-person microbusinesses to co-operatives and huge multinational companies like Nestlé or Shell
However… today we are going to be looking more closely at multinational companies • Multinational companies are entities that have operations in more than one country. • Quiz – identify the logos of the multinational companies you have been given. See how many you can guess.
Multinational Companies The enormous economic and political power of the largest of these companies makes them significant In 2012, Forbes’ biggest 2000 companies accounted for $2. 43 trillion in profits, $159 trillion in assets and employed 87 million people worldwide The combined sales of the biggest 500 companies in the USA alone would make it the second largest economy in the world far bigger than the economies of the UK, France or Germany.
Multinational Companies • Some multinational companies dominate entire business sectors. • Parts of the food industry, for instance, are controlled by only a handful of big firms. • While five million small farms produce over 90 percent of the world’s cocoa just nine companies control the supply.
