Our Lady of Sorrow Second Sorrow The Flight to Egypt
We gather in the name of Jesus who came to bring Good News to the world. We pray that we let our true colours shine when we are living in Christ. We pray that we let our true colours shine when we are loving in Christ. We pray that we let our true colours shine when we are learning in Christ.
This term we focus on Our Lady of Dolours. Through her wisdom, compassion and justice we learn how to turn our sorrows into joy. We begin our prayer ritual by making the sign of the cross.
We prepare to listen to the Word A Reading from Matthew Mary’s Second Sorrow The Flight to Egypt
The hardships were not over for Mary. No sooner was Jesus born in a poor stable than there arrived terrifying news. King Herod had decided to kill all the boys under two years of age who had been born in Bethlehem and surrounding areas.
Herod was worried about his position of king. The visit by the Magi had upset him. He feared that the Messiah whom they spoke of would seize his power.
Joseph was warned in a dream of this dreadful threat. He took the child and his mother and set out for Egypt so that Jesus would escape the massacre.
It was a case of instant flight with all the accompanying worry for Mary; hasty preparations, travelling under the cover of darkness, and with little knowledge of the way and finally arrival in Egypt.
Mary relied completely on Joseph her husband, who, as head of the family, took care of everything. Both of them in spite of all their anxiety and uncertainty of what tomorrow might bring, relied completely on God.
What do we learn from Mary in times of sorrow - how do we learn to use her sorrows to live in joy? We are thankful for our family who can always help us when we are in need. We are always know that God is there for us.
We now pray as a school community. The response is Mary, our Mother of Compassion, Justice and Wisdom pray for us. We pray for children everywhere who do not feel the love of a family, the safety of a home or the warmth of a friend. Response: Mary, our Mother of Compassion, Justice and Wisdom pray for us.
We pray for a heart open to self sacrifice for the sake of others. Response: Mary, our Mother of Compassion, Justice and Wisdom pray for us.
Meditation
Please join us as we say the Hail Mary Full of grace The Lord is with you Blessed are you among women And blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus Holy Mary Mother of God Pray for us sinners Now and at the hour of our death Amen
May Our Lady of Dolours, who turns our sorrows into joy, be with us in all that we do. We pray that we rise and shine today and everyday. In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Please join us as we sing Like Mary
Like Mary Let’s sing a song for Mary, the one God chose to have baby Jesus and help him grow. Through struggles and adventures, as years went by her child became an adult and left her side. When soldiers captured Jesus to end his life, then Mary showed her courage; she stayed close by. She loved him in the stable at Bethlehem; she loved him as he suffered and rose again. Oh’ my we be brave and walk in God’s way like Mary. It wasn’t always easy, not wasn’t always fun, but Mary always treasures her special Son. As crowds began to follow, both day and night, with miracles and stories he touched their lives. God could have found a princess with golden crown. God chose a humble girl from a country town. So come, let’s all be ready to take our turn, for Jesus calls the humble to change the world. Oh’ my we be brave and walk in God’s way like Mary.
