Saul was 30 years old when he became King of Israel. and he was Israel’s king for 42 years. When King Saul started as King he loved and followed God’s spirit left Saul and God sent Samuel to find the next King. God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to the home of Jesse (David’s father). David’s family worked as shepherds and Samuel found David out in the field taking care of the sheep. This is where Samuel took a container of olive oil and poured it on David’s head. (This was the way Kings were annointed. ) Then God’s spirit entered David. Samuel took David to King Saul to begin to serve him. David loved God so much and he served God by being King Saul’s helper. David helped King Saul be calm when he got mad by playing his harp for him. David became best friends with King Saul’s son, Jonathan. David helped the Israelites by fighting the Philistine Giant, Goliath! Remember: David took his slingshot and 5 stones and took the giant down with only 1 stone. God wanted David to be a leader of the Israelites. God loved David and He knew how much David loved Him. After King Saul died David became the 2 nd King of Israel. David was a warrior King, he led the Israelites to win MANY battles! David made plans to build the temple. But because David was such a warrior, God did not want him to build the temple. David would make the plans for the temple and save the building of the temple for his son Solomon (who will be the 3 rd King of Israel!) Make: Make a crown for David. Add story elements that will help children be able to remember details of the story of David to the crown. Groups of 5 stones, the number 2 to represent him being the 2 nd King, music notes, hearts (A man after God’s heart), swords (a mighty warrior), etc. Talk: David loved God so much. He was kind to King Saul and his son Jonathan. God loved David too! God loves us like he loved David. God wants us to love Him too. How can we show that we love God? Bible Words: Acts 13: 22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. God testified, “I have found David son of Jesse, a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do. ”
