Classroom Description Kindergarten Class Students sit 4 to a table; 2 on each side. There is a large group area rug in front of the Smart Board and a small area rug for reading groups. Off to the side by the bookshelf is an area for independent readers. Storage shelves, bathroom, and cubbies are on the other side. The school is located in a small suburban area. There are 15 students in my classroom; 12 boys and 3 girls. The underrepresented group in my classroom is girls. The boys think they are superior because of the number difference.

Kindergarten Lesson SS. K. E. 1: Investigate occupations within the school and local community. I feel that this lesson is important because not only does it introduce the people in their community that have important helpful jobs, but it also gives them ideas of things that they may want to do when they get older. I think that it is very important for students to respect and look up to “community helpers”. Today’s society is filled with bad influences and so many children look up to them. Students need to be aware of just how important these “community helpers” are. The bulletin board will start out with just one picture on it, then throughout the unit we will add more occupations.

Culturally Competent Teacher Every teacher has had the problem of the boys saying, “You can’t do this cause you’re a girl!”. In my classroom that has become a huge issue because there are so few girls and they have believed that they cannot be as successful as the boys. The images that will be posted on the bulletin board show both male and female “community helpers”. This will show the boys that girls can be just as successful as boys and these images will also boost the girls confidence in themselves. The images also give students a positive pole model to look up to, instead of a MTV Pop star, or a WWE wrestler. The “community helpers” have a job they can take pride in. This lesson will also show the importance of each job in the community. I will tie that into the importance of each students job in the classroom i. e. paper passer, trash collector, book straightener etc.
