Our beloved town Algiers
Algiers and its culture Algiers is the capital of Algeria, and the most populated city with 1. 57 million inhabitants.
An overview of Algiers :
Algiers is situated in the north of Algeria ; it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea in the north, by Tipaza in the west, Boumerdes in the east and Blida in the south.
Climate Algiers has a Mediterranean weather. It’s known for its long hot and dry summers ; cold and wet winters. Algiers Neighbourhoods Algiers is also known for its many archaeological touristic sites and monuments such as :
- The Casbah
The Casbah is the oldest neighbourhood of Algiers. This citadel was built by Berber and Romains. And was renovated by the Othomans and the French. It contains buildings and mosques of the 17 th century; the mosque EL DJEDID, the mosque KETCHAOUA, the mosque EL KABIR, DAR MUSTAPHA PASHA… **The Casbah was listed in 1992 on the UNESCO list of world heritage.

- « LE JARDIN D’ESSAI »
« Le jardin d’essai » is situated in the Hamma district. It’s a botanical jewel of over 3000 plant species. The west side of the garden is occupated by the French garden.
- « Maqam Echahid »
« Maqam Echahid » is a martyr memorial commemorating the war of Algeria. The monument was inaugurated in 1982 on the 20 th anniversary of Algeria’s independence.
- « Notre Dame d’Afrique »
« Notre Dame d’Afrique » is one of the city’s most outstanding monuments, the basilica was built around 1858.
- The « Place of El Amir Abdelkader »
The « Place of the Emir Abdelkader » was erected in the memory of this hero during the war of Algeria. Political Algerian military leader, writer and poet, philosopher and humanist, he has marked Algeria’s History.
- Food : Algiers also gets some emblematic dishes such as : Chorba → It is prepared with sheep meat, vermicelli or frik (cracked wheat) and vegetables. Chorba can also be prepared with veal or beef legs.
“Mtawem” → is an Algerian dish made from minced meat balls, chicken or lamb meat and almonds. Sauce is made with grated onions and lots of garlic. It’s very delicious.
“Dziriettes” , which literally means "Algerian“, is an Algerian pastry. The Dziriettes are made of slightly sweetened flour dough including a farce fragrant lemon peel, almonds, soaked in a preparation of honey and orange flower water.
