Decline of the Ottoman Empire After the death of Suleyman the Sultan in 1556 the empire slowly declined. Ottomans lost the battle of Lepanto in 1571. A big lose that made the Ottomans persona of invincibility shatter into two. Economic problems hurt the ottomans around the 1600 s when new sea trade routes were found. Corrupt and weak Sultans inevitably drove the Ottoman Empire to it’s final days.
