What is osteoporosis? � The deterioration of bone due to aging, sedentary living, and poor nutrition. � About 10 million Americans have osteoporosis and about half of women 50 and older will have an osteoporosis-related fracture in their life time.
Risk Factors � Gender › Females are 4 times greater risk � Low body weight/small body frame › Underweight individuals have lower bone mass � Race/ethnicity › Caucasians and Asians are at higher risk than Latinos and African Americans
Risk Factors � Age › After age 30, up to 1% of bone loss per year � Family history › Genetics and life style � Physical activity › Sedentary lifestyle leads to weak bones � Calcium and Vitamin D › Low intake
Risk Factors � Smoking › Promotes bone loss � Heavy drinking › Linked with weak bones � Some medications increase risk � Menopause › Decreased estrogen causes rapid bone loss
