Osnovna škola Bartola Kašića Vinkovci Erasmus+ project 2018 -2020 W. A. T. E. R. – in other ways Mineral waters in Croatia JANUARY 2020
• Thermal waters are known as valuable natural resources of a country. • Croatian hot springs have been known for centuries since discovered by the ancient Romans who launched the tradition of building hot baths. Some spas still feature Roman baths within the archaeological sites that can be found in the vicinity of spa complexes.
Locations of thermal and mineral water springs in Croatia. Most of them are located in the beautiful natural surroundings of northern and eastern regions: Hrvatsko Zagorje (Varaždin, Tuhelj, Krapina, Stubica), Slavonija (Bizovac, Daruvar, Topusko) and Istra (Istarske Toplice).
BIZOVAČKE TOPLICE • Slavonian spa located 18 km from Osijek where thousands year old spring was discovered only in the early 1970 s. • The discovery was a source of the multiple legends claiming that the Panos Sea, which had disappeared in the entrails of the earth thousands of years before, was found at the depth of 1830 m.
• The Bizovačke toplice is the hottest in Europe, with its temperature reaching 96°С. • The water is enriched with magnesium, sodium, barium, potassium, strontium and content of salt almost identical to that of the Adriatic Sea. • Bizovačke toplice offers posttraumatic treatment of sports injuries and chronic medical conditions, such as rheumatic, respiratory, neurological and gynaecological diseases.
TOPLICE IN LIPIK • It is believed that the ancient Romans knew about the advantages of thermal water from Lipik. But, it was first mentioned in written documents in the 16 th century. • The tested water is mineral, high in fluorine, sodium, hydrogen carbohydrate and chlorine, and it has hyperthermic characteristics. It has strong balneological properties because of its temperature, amount of fluoride and content of the dominant ions: sodium, hydrogen carbonate and chlorine.
• Other than being used for bathing purposes, because of its medicinal properties the water from Lipik is also used for drinking. • Until the World War I, Lipik was a famous European thermal bathhouse and a sanatorium, and the mineral water was sold on the market until 1918 under the names "Lipiker thermalquelle" and "Lipiki hevviz".
Mineral water got its name "Studenac"(Spring) in 1998, which it has kept until the present day.
DARUVARSKE TOPLICE • Spa resort in western Slavonia 130 km from Zagreb located at the foot of the Papuk Mountains, 156 m above the sea level in the Toplica River valley. • The resort dates back to the ancient times, when it was called Aquae Balissae.
• The natural wealth of Daruvar is based on both deposits of curative mineral mud and a few thermal springs with 33 to 47°C warm water that is rich in magnesium, calcium, hydrocarbonate. • They are widely used for posttraumatic and postoperative rehabilitation, treating rheumatism, female sterility, vertebral and other locomotor system disease.
KRAPINSKE TOPLICE • The small town of Krapinske Toplice in the middle of Zagorje hills and forests hides rich springs that are used since 1772, when the firs bath was built. • The temperature of thermal water from the four sources at Krapinske Toplice is between 39°C and 41°C. • The springs produce radioactive thermal water with a high content of magnesium, calcium and hydrocarbonate, but a low amount of sulphur.
• A whole range of medical programmes are based on the application of natural therapeutic means such as the hyperthermal water and naturally therapeutic mud – “fango”, along with a series of modern procedures of physical medicine and rehabilitation. • Krapinske Toplice is also famous for its successful treatment of heart and vascular diseases, in other words high quality cardiology and cardiovascular surgery with a shorter period of hospitalisation.
STUBIČKE TOPLICE • The water at the Stubičke Toplice is known for its high temperatures which at the source reach up to 69°C. • The healing thermal water abounds in minerals, such as magnesium, sodium, zinc, iodine, calcium, barium, potassium, carbonates, sulphates, etc.
• Thanks to the chemical composition it is suitable for the treatment of the rheumatism of the joints and muscles, discopathy and posttraumatic conditions. • Also on offer at the spa is a cryosauna, the treatment of exposing the body to extreme low temperatures from -110°C to -190°C, which positively affects the look of the skin and the raising of immunity and also supports weight loss.
TUHELJSKE TOPLICE • Tuhelj is located in the picturesque region of Hrvatsko Zagorje about 50 km away from Zagreb. • Thermal water belongs to the group of sulphur waters, which makes it one of the most healing thermal waters in this part of Europe. It is rich in sulphur, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium and strontium and other elements that enhance its healing effect.
• At Tuheljske Toplice at the very source of thermal water and therapeutic mud, there is the largest bathing area in Croatia with more than 5, 000 m 2 of water areas.
VARAŽDINSKE TOPLICE • The Varaždinske Toplice is a balneo-mud resort of the continental part of Croatia located some 200 m high, 68 km to the north-east of the capital city Zagreb and 12 km to the south-east of the town of Varaždin. • It is a small village of about 2000 people located near the remains of an ancient Roman settlement.
• The thermal waters of the Varaždin toplice were known in ancient times as Aquae Iasae thermal baths, and in the 4 th century they were restored by the Roman emperor Constantine.
• The springs here can reach temperatures of 58°C. • The water is rich in fluorine and sulphur, a composition that in combination with other ingredients has been proven to successfully cure neurological disturbances, rheumatic, orthopedic and other locomotor system diseases, different traumatic conditions.
ISTARSKE TOPLICE • Istarske Toplice is 35 km from Poreč located in the northwest of Istria. Plenty of Roman debris have been found around the spring from the days when they too used it for its healing powers. • Ever since people have studied and utilised the waters that fall beneath the 85 metre tall Gorostas rock.
• The water’s rich composition is known to produce an amazing healing effect thanks to the high sulphur content, 13 minerals (calcium, sodium, chlorine, etc. ) and an optimal radioactivity level.
