Climate changes
What's the climate? Climate is a set of expected values of meteorological elements and phenomena
What is climate change? Climate change is a long -term change in the statistical distribution of climatic factors over a period of tens to millions of years
Why does our climate change? • First change comes from outside the Earth – every few thousand years Earth changes its orbit around the Sun – when this happens it can finish an Ice Age, or it can start a new one
Milankovitch cycles
MILUTIN MILANKOVIĆ - astronomer, climatologist, geophysicist, mathematician - the creator of a mathematical theory of climate that interprets the geological past of climate on Earth, causes of occurrence and periodicity of the appearance of the ice age and climate change
Second change comes from inside the Earth (for example volcano)
Third change comes because of people (for example: deforestation, fossil fuel consumption)
Greenhouse effect • Consumption of fossil fuels increases the carbon dioxide concentration in the atmosphere and thus affects greenhouse effect and consequently global warming
the ice is melting drought
Climate changes in Croatia According to documents of European Parliament, Croatia will experience the consequences of climate changes: - longer dry periods - less rainfall in some regions - extreme weather (storms) - endangered biodiversity - forest fires - less water for agriculture - more energy will be needed for airconditioning - health problems – mainly because of extreme heat and insect bites - cities will become urban heat islands (Split, Rijeka, Zagreb, Osijek, Zadar already have problems)
We have noticed changes on our region: - summers are hotter: - less rain causes problems for farmers - people have health problems because of extreme heat - dry autumns and winters: - problems for agriculture, crops cannot grow - extreme weather: storms, hailstorms damage crops and farmers must invest a lot of money to protect them heavy rainfall floods towns, fields
