Purpose of the System To provide a platform for the advancement of clinical skills and decision making through the facilitation of clinical reasoning Anatomy Physiology Pathology and Diagnosis Prognosis and Treatment Research and clinical experience
Where did we come from? The Founders Cliff Fowler David Lamb Erl Pettman John Oldham Wendy Aspinall Late 70’s started an education system in response to the needs of Canadian PTs
Original System EV series Taught by exceptional individuals and teaching reflected teachers strengths But. . No uniform manuals No consistency with course content No ongoing evaluation process
The New System Level I (challenge) Completion of 90 hours of Mentorship before challenging the OSCE Level II Upper and Lower Courses With Case and Exam Level III Upper and Lower With Case and Exam Practical Exam #1
The New System Completion of 60 hours of Mentorship before challenging the Advanced Exam Level IV Case and Exam Level V Diploma Exam -OSCE -Written M/C -Case study Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Manipulative Physical Therapists Diploma of Advanced Orthopaedic Manual And Manipulative Physiotherapy
Courses Manuals are consistent across the country Course outline, goals and content are uniform Prices are similar New changes Can take a Level III upper after a Level II upper and before a Level II lower
Evaluation Need to have successfully completed the courses and exams of: Level III and accumulated 90 hours of mentorship Then you can register for Practical Exam #1
Evaluation Need to have successfully completed Level IV course and exam Level V course and accumulated 60 hours of mentorship Then you can register for the Advanced Exam which consists of: Case Study M/C written exam OSCE
Mentorship Before the Practical exam #1 - 90 hours 55 need to be with a FCAMPT Maximum of a 4: 1 ratio (candidate : FCAMPT) Ideally should be with patients 35 hours can be in small group studying, case study, skills practice sessions etc with No FCAMPT needed Gather hours gradually- maximum of 10 hours before completion of Level II, with a minimum of 30 hours after completion of the Level III
Mentorship Before the written, case and final OSCE exam- 60 hours 30 need to be with a FCAMPT Maximum of a 4: 1 ratio (candidate: CAMPT) Ideally should be with patients 30 hours can be in small group studying, case study, skills practice sessions etc with No FCAMPT needed Gather hours gradually- minimum of 15 hours after Level IV, and 15 after Level V

Next Steps for the System Currently integrating a critical appraisal course offered through U of Toronto (mandatory for those registering into system at Level 1 in 2014) Working towards the integration of a research experience for candidates enrolled within the system-integrated for Level 1 registrants ? All changes are in accordance with maintenance of IFOMPT standards
UWO Master of Clinical Science (Manipulative Therapy) Canada has established a one-year, distance learning university based program at UWO Pre-requisites: BSc PT, MPT Minimum 2 years clinical experience Successful completion of Level II upper and lower 30 hours of mentorship Member of CPA /Ortho Div
MCl. Sc Program Distance learning through OWL Research methodology Professionalism / Clinical reasoning Research project 8 week intensive clinical skills at UWO 70 hours mentoring in own community under FCAMPT (1: 1 ratio) Written and OSCE exams
MCl. Sc Program Mac. Master University Program start September 2013 Minimum requirement of Level 3 Upper and Lower 2 year program with full research project Short residency periods Distance based learning program
