Organizing Your Info On your desk ISearch Handbook
Organizing Your Info On your desk: üI-Search Handbook üStack of all Notecards
Congrats! You are done taking notes. o o A Put your Source Cards aside, or back in your folder. We’ll deal with them later. Reorganize your Info Cards by subtopic: (“National” 57) Blah blah Rules of the Army ***Not all cards in one stack will have the same source letter!
Open to page 17 of your Handbook, and look at your subtopic piles… o o v Do you have Info Cards for all your subtopics? Check them off on page 17. Any missing = write yourself a note on your worksheet to take notes on that subtopic. Do you have ENOUGH Info Cards for each subtopic? Fewer than 5 = write yourself a note on your worksheet to take more notes! Note: 2 careers? DO NOT separate by career. All salary stuff goes together, for BOTH careers.
Put your piles in order: o Think about which order makes the most sense for your subtopics. Arrange the piles on your desk, in the order you will write about them. Some ideas: • • • Chronological (for a “how to: ” first this, then you do this, then this…) What is most important first, 2 nd most important 2 nd, etc. In the order you researched (first I wanted to find out this, then this…)
o Now, write down the order of your subtopics on your worksheet. You may abbreviate instead of writing complete sentences.
Topic Sentences: turn to page 66 o o o Each subtopic will be one paragraph in your paper. Every paragraph must have a topic sentence. Underline the first sentence of each paragraph on pages 66 -70 (all of Part 3). These are the topic sentences. In the margin, write the subtopic (phrase of 15 words) you think this paragraph is about.
Now you’ve seen examples, it’s time to write your own topic sentences: o o Use a transitional TS like “Once I found out all I could about the rules of the Army, I wanted to see what I could find about the rules of the Navy” Or “After I found out the food would be so bad, I wanted to research the other kinds of hardships I’d have to deal with in college. ” Use transitional words/phrases like: Since, If, After, Once, Before, Although, Until, At that point Write ONE topic sentence for EACH subtopic, IN ORDER, on the BACK of your worksheet.
Transition Paragraph: first paragraph of Part 3 is like a mini-intro to your research. You will: n n n Explain how your research went—what good info/bad info did you find, what struggles did you have, what parts did you enjoy, how reliable did your sources seem, where did you find the most interesting info, etc. (some but not necessarily all of these) Generally summarize the order of your Part 3 (1 -3 sentences) Write it on your worksheet now!
Last 3 minutes of class: o o This sheet is due Tuesday. What parts do you need to finish? Write it on the bottom section of your sheet (My homework for Monday). Add: whatever notes you wrote to yourself (additional research you need to finish, etc. ) Add: Any items you don’t already have a complete grade on. Add: “Read Page 40 in Handbook, COMPLETE worksheet on Page 41. ”
