Organizational Socialization of Human Resources Professionals at Pfizer Corporation Megan Dugan Purpose Organizational Socialization Analysis of my time at Pfizer I hoped to use this project as a way to alleviate fears I had going into graduation and the job market. By being able to reflect on my major and possible job field interests I was able to do so. The theories and researchers I used to help define and explain organization socialization were: • Edgar Schein (1968) • Van Maanen & Schein (1979) • Fredric Jablin (1984) I also collected analyzed my field notes of interactions with roughly twenty Pfizer employees during my time as an intern. In my analysis of the ways in which Pfizer as an organization socializes new employees into the company, I arrived at many interesting findings and conclusions. • A gap in intercultural communication trainings being offered. • More need for mentorship for new employees. • A need for more constructive department meetings. Introduction The research question guiding this project is “In what ways does Pfizer Corporation socialize new employees into the company? ” To examine this question, my paper aimed to describe: 1) Organizational socialization 2) Past research in organizational socialization 3) Themes that emerged from the analysis of my field notes as an intern at Pfizer 4) A discussion of my findings and practical recommendations about how to make a successful entry into the human resources profession. Past Research on Organizational Socialization I used past studies done that examined different forms and levels of effectiveness for socialization practices. • Klein & Weaver – examined the effectiveness of trainings programs for new hires • Kowtha – examined socialization of newcomers to the hotel industry Similarly, I tied in these theories that were touched upon during my time as a Communication Studies major. • Social Exchange Theory • Symbolic Interaction Theory Conclusion This paper aimed to describe organizational socialization, past research in organizational socialization, themes that emerged from the analysis of my field notes as an intern at Pfizer, and a discussion of my findings and practical recommendations about how to make a successful entry into the human resources profession.
